Sometimes, when attempting to run their virtual machine, a window prompt with an error message “virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running .”This error stops users from utilizing a virtual machine, and the reasons for this error can be associated with the Hyper-V service and Hyper-V feature.


Use Command Prompt

To use the Command Prompt, pursue these on-screen steps provided below:

  1. To invoke the Win + X menu, hold the Win and X buttons together over your keyboard.
  2. After loading the Command Prompt, input the pursuing command, then hit the Enter button: bcdedit /set HypervisorLaunchType auto
  3. Now, reboot your system and check the issue.

Start the Hyper-V Service

To start the Hyper-V service, pursue these on-screen steps provided below:

  1. To invoke the Run accessory, hold the Win and R buttons together over your keyboard.
  2. Once it launches, insert ‘services.msc‘ in it and hit the Enter button to invoke the Services screen.
  3. You should find the service of ‘Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management.’
  4. Then click twice on it to launch Properties.
  5. Later, change the Startup type to the Automatic option and ensure the service is performing.
  6. Now, reboot the system.

Enable Hyper-V Function

To enable the Hyper-V function, pursue these on-screen steps provided below:

  1. Navigate to the Windows menu on your system and click on it to launch the menu.
  2. Then click on the Control Panel option.
  3. You should reach the ‘Programs and Features’ option and select it.
  4. Go to the left side panel and select the ‘Turn Windows Features on or off’ option.
  5. You should move down and extend the entry of ‘Hyper-V.’
  6. Thereafter, extend the list of ‘Hyper-V Platform.’
  7. Now, mark the box of ‘Hyper-V Hypervisor’ and click on the OK button.
  8. Finally, reboot the system and return to the ‘Windows Features’ screen and turn on the ‘Hyper-V’ function. 

Delete Problematic Updates


To delete problematic updates, pursue these on-screen steps provided below:

  1. To get the Windows settings, hold the Win, and I buttons simultaneously on the keyboard.
  2. Then reach the ‘Update & Security’ option and click on it.
  3. After that, click on the ‘Windows Update’ button.
  4. Go to the right-side panel and select the ‘View update history’ option.
  5. Once you get the prompt screen, hit the ‘Uninstall updates’ option to reach the Control Panel.
  6. Now, you will get a Windows updates list and then choose the suspicious updates.
  7. Finally, hit the Uninstall button.

Update the Drivers

Now, you can consider updating the drivers to repair this issue. In some situations, the hypervisor not running problem is prompted by a damaged Bluetooth driver, and the problem goes after updating the driver.

To update the drivers, you can either run in Device Manager or go to the manufacturer’s site to download the driver’s latest version.
